HAT TRICK FOR RAATS CHENIN BLANC

October 2007    by Peridot Communications

Raats Family Wines continues to impress wine critics worldwide and scores a remarkable rating in the October issue of the prestigious Wine Spectator magazine.  The 2006 Raats Chenin Blanc received an impressive score of 91 and maintains an incredible track record for this varietal produced by Bruwer Raats.

Raats’ Chenins have been awarded scores over 90 in Wine Spectator for the past three consecutive years, which shows an inimitable consistency from the Stellenbosch winemaker. In the October issue, the 2005 Raats Cabernet Franc also steps into the accolade fray with a top score of 91, which makes it the highest rated South African Cabernet Franc.

Senior editor and lead taster James Molesworth tasted both wines. He described the Cabernet Franc as having a “long, juicy finish that lets the fruit and olive notes linger”, while the Chenin impressed him with its ripeness, yet remarkable litheness and elegance. “Tangy mineral, chamomile and honeysuckle notes lead the way for ginger, pear and cardamom flavours,” writes Molesworth.

“Obviously I am really honoured that they rate my Chenin Blanc so highly, but it is even more encouraging that this wine performs consistently well. I am also delighted that the Cabernet Franc also received attention and such a great score. In the wine industry, it becomes increasing important to show consistency and quality across your range,” mentions Raats, who recently released his new vintages.

His latest range includes the customary Raats Original Chenin Blanc, Raats Chenin Blanc and Raats Cabernet Franc, but also features maiden vintages of a 2006 Raats Cabernet Sauvignon and the Janice, a natural sweet Chenin Blanc.

Columnist Bruce Sanderson, who does not normally cover South African wines, also included the Raats Chenin Blanc in his The Savvy Shopper section of the same issue.
